Mastin Electrical – Local Electricians You Can Trust

Electricity is something we rely on every day—but when something goes wrong, it can quickly become dangerous or stressful. At Mastin Electrical, we believe in keeping our customers informed and safe. Here’s a handy guide on what to do in some common electrical situations around the home or workplace.

1. Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

A tripping circuit breaker is a sign that something isn’t right—it’s doing its job to prevent overheating or fire.

What to do:

  • Unplug all appliances on the affected circuit.
  • Reset the breaker by flipping it off, then on again.
  • Plug appliances back in one at a time to see if one causes it to trip again.
  • Still tripping? Call a licensed electrician. It could be a wiring issue or an overloaded circuit.

Tip: Avoid using multiple high-wattage appliances (like heaters and kettles) on the same circuit.

2. Power Outage

Power outages can happen for various reasons—storms, grid faults, or local damage.

What to do:

  • Check if it’s just your property. Look outside—are neighbours’ lights on?
  • Look at your switchboard. If the main switch is off, try resetting it. If it won't stay on, there may be a fault.
  • If it’s widespread, check SA Power Networks' outage map or call them.
  • Use torches instead of candles and keep fridge/freezer doors closed.

Call us if power is only partially out or keeps cutting in and out—we can help identify faults quickly.

3. Flooding or Water Near Electrical Equipment

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. Don’t take any risks.

What to do:

  • Stay clear of any wet areas with electrical outlets or appliances.
  • Do not touch electrical items that may have been submerged.
  • If safe, turn off power at the main switchboard.
  • Call Mastin Electrical to assess and test your system before switching anything back on.

Tip: After storms or floods, always have an electrician check wiring before reusing appliances or switches.

4. Burning Smell or Buzzing Sound from Outlets

These are warning signs of overheating or arcing.

What to do:

  • Turn off the power to the affected circuit at your switchboard.
  • Avoid using the outlet or switch until it’s been inspected.
  • Call an electrician ASAP. It could be a sign of a loose connection or melting insulation.

Upgrading old power points or switches can prevent issues like these from happening.

5. Electric Shocks or Tingling from Appliances

Even a small tingle is a red flag.

What to do:

  • Stop using the appliance immediately.
  • Turn it off at the wall and unplug it if safe to do so.
  • Don’t use it again until a licensed electrician inspects it.
  • If you feel shocks from taps or metal surfaces, this could indicate an earthing issue—call an electrician immediately.

Tip: Have safety switches (RCBOs) installed to protect your family from electrical faults.

6. Electrical Emergency? Don’t Wait.

If you smell burning, hear loud zaps or see smoke or sparking:

  • Turn off power at the main switch if it’s safe.
  • Get everyone out of the area.
  • Call 000 if there’s fire or danger to life.
  • Then call us at Mastin Electrical on 0403 895 327 — we’re here to help.
