Why You Should Upgrade Your Switchboard to RCBOs

June 30, 2025

When was the last time you checked your switchboard? If it’s been a while—or if your home still relies on traditional circuit breakers and fuses—it might be time to consider an upgrade. At Mastin Electrical, we recommend replacing older breakers with RCBOs to improve safety, reliability, and compliance in your home.

What Is an RCBO?

RCBO stands for Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection. In simple terms, an RCBO combines the functions of:

  • A Safety Switch (RCD) – which protects you from electric shock and fire hazards by detecting leakage current, and
  • A Circuit Breaker (MCB) – which protects wiring from overloading and short circuits.

With an RCBO, each individual circuit gets both types of protection built in.

Why Upgrade to RCBOs?

1. Enhanced Electrical Safety

RCBOs quickly disconnect the power if a fault is detected—whether it’s a short circuit, overload, or current leakage. This means better protection against:

  • Electric shocks
  • Electrical fires
  • Damaged appliances

Each RCBO monitors its own circuit, so a fault in one area won’t affect the rest of the home.

2. Fewer Nuisance Trippings

Older switchboards with a single RCD can be frustrating—one fault trips the whole board, leaving you in the dark. With RCBOs, each circuit operates independently. If there’s a fault in your toaster, only that power point will trip—not the whole house.

3. Up to Current Standards

Switchboard upgrades with RCBOs ensure your home meets the latest AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. If you're renovating, selling, or adding new circuits, your installation must comply with current regulations.

4. More Control and Easy Fault Finding

With RCBOs, electricians can quickly identify and isolate any problem circuits. This makes repairs faster and often cheaper—plus, it means less downtime for your household.

5. Future-Proofing Your Home

Modern homes are more power-hungry than ever, with EV chargers, air conditioning, and smart devices. An upgraded switchboard with RCBOs ensures your system is ready for future technology—safely.

Do I Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

If your switchboard has:

  • Ceramic fuses
  • No safety switch
  • Regular tripping
  • Burning smells or buzzing sounds
…then yes, it’s time to upgrade.
